What is in a Name?
When you are part of a large team nothing can be as important as knowing each person's name. It makes an enormous difference when you can address each person by their first name.
I f you are like me you live in fear of forgetting names and I have had some shockers in my time. I think the biggest driver of being bad with names is actually the thought of being someone who is bad at names.
Franklin Roosevelt was remembered as someone who always remembered each of his staffs names. How did he do it? He imagined each of them with their name written on their forehead in big coloured texta.
People always feel good when you remember their name. It makes things personal.
A couple of quick pointers on how you can be better at remembering people's names:
1. Pay attention when they say their name. Half the time you are thinking about the handshake, a hug or a kiss or what their first impression of you will be.
2. Repeat their name as soon as you hear it. You can also spell it out particularly if it something a little different.
3. Associate their name with an action.
4. Make their name rhyme with something. Eg. Robin Bobin, Hugh ...
5. Picture their name on their forehead.
6. Write down the names of all the new people you meet in a day.
7. Repeat the name as much as you can in the conversation.
Remember to use people's name as much as you can. The more you use them the more you will remember them. Also remembering a person's name is the first step to being a great team player.
