Team Building - The Pessimistic View

There are still a great many out there that hold team building in a negative view. They see it as a variety of trust games and activities, better suited to the lovey dovey world of the 1960's then modern society. While this was true in the past as shown by many older team building books (Silver Bullets, Quick Silver) team building has evolved, much like the modern world into an essential part of any business.
Whereas in the past people could be expected to work in the same job for 40 years with minimal extra stimulation, the modern marketplace requires organizations to look after their staff, especially those with special skills or an obvious knack for their industry, for fear the will be poached to a rival firm. The most obvious way to do that is through incentives and salary however another much underrated factor is enjoyment. Those who enjoy where they currently work are much less likely to want to leave, even with extra financial benefits and this can be addressed very easily through regular team building.
Creating an enjoyable workplace is as much about financial success as it is about individual success. If individuals are feeling like they are succeeding and being rewarded for it they are much less likely to look for opportunities elsewhere. As well as this team building for your staff is essential as positive relationships will always improve the workplace resulting in a more cohesive work environment.
While in the past team building has been seen as an annoying activity that no-one really benefits from it has molded into an essential business tool required by any successful organization. Without happy staff you are more likely to lose in the long run as people look for better, more enjoyable and individually beneficial work places in the future.
