A team's culture can be defined in many different ways, how they interact, how productive they are, how well they know each other outside the work environment. However for me the most telling factor of a successful team is how strong they are when the going gets tough.
With the state of the current economy predicted to only get worse, at least for the next six months or so, maintaining a strong culture within your team is going to be difficult. Redundancy's and lay-offs are happening in all industries and as such people are starting to look out for themselves rather then strive to ensure the team and ultimately the business are a success.
Whether you're looking to build a culture or maintain one you've already got, there is a distinct advantage in pursuing some sort of team building option away from the workplace. Some might disagree and say 'how can we justify spending cash on team building when we just released 10 staff last week'. The answer to that is simple, by improving your culture and team dynamics, productivity will increase and the team will endeavour to work as one to find new alternatives to ensure the business comes out the other side having taken minimal damage.

Whilst the pressures of the workplace will still be demanding, employees will be more productive as a team having experienced some time away from the daily grind. I am not saying all employers should go out and partake in a team building activity immediately however in the long term it's only going to benefit the business if at some point all your employees can be taken away from the work environment and do something together.
