Best Quote: On Self Betrayal – “When I betray myself, I begin to see the world in a way that justifies my self-betrayal. When I see a self-justifying world, my view of reality becomes distorted”.

Imagine being sat down by your boss after being with the company for a month and being told there is a problem and that problem is YOU! This book is a fictional account of a high level executive who is pulled out of his work to be educated by the senior management team on getting out of the box (and away from self betrayal).

Are you in the box or out of the box? Every choice we make, or don't make, puts us squarely in the box or outside of the box.

Self deception is like being in the box because you place yourself inside a space where you are not influenced by external factors. Self-deception blinds us to the true cause of problems. Once blind all the solutions we can think of will actually make matters worse. It is for this reason they believe that self –deception is such an integral component for teams and leadership. Fundamentally team leadership is about making matters better. When we are self-deceived our leadership is undermined at every turn.

Identification of self-deception is one of the most important steps in thinking outside of the box. The journey of Tom Callum guided by his mentor Bud in the fictional company of Zagrum initially shows diagnosis of being in the box and then show Tom how he can make decisions which take him out of the box. Tom eventually realises for things to change first he must change.

This was an excellent easy read book which I have found myself applying to my inner conscience on a daily basis. Self deception could well be one of your blockers for moving forward as a team player and leader.
