Summary:
Arriving in Melbourne early on Friday 3rd April Andy, Kingsley and Oliver made a quick transition from Tullamarine to the CBD, allowing plenty of time for final preparation for the days Amazing Race.
10:00am ticked over and the race was on, with the four teams from Essendon Airport and Essendon Fields completing their first challenge successfully, they headed off across Melbourne towards their next check point, on what was at this point a perfect Victorian morning.
The Amazing Race can be as challenging to us as facilitators as it is for those competing, this particular race would keep the BeChallenged team on their toes to the very end. As the teams progressed across the CBD and headed towards St Kilda, Andy, Oliver and Kingsley firstly endured the theft of a BeChallenged bag. Leaving Oliver with no equipment and not for the first time clues less, teams approached for their next challenge. Successfully overcoming this hurdle with some improvisation and quick thinking, Mother Nature then joined the party with a spectacular thunder storm and tarantula rain. Melbourne's Luna Park provided a brief interval and the opportunity for teams to momentarily dry out as we headed into the final stages of the race.
At this point it was becoming increasingly obvious that our intended finishing location and BBQ lunch were perhaps not suited to the current conditions! A few phone calls later and plan ‘B' was put into action with Oliver ensuring all teams boarded the correct tram and headed back towards the CBD and Flinders Street. The following 10 minutes was a mini Amazing Race in itself! With the teams completing challenges as they travelled towards the city by tram, Andy and Kingsley battled Melbourne's back street attempting to stay one step ahead of the pack. Stuck in traffic and only seconds ahead of the teams, Andy took to the streets, finishing mat under one arm as he sprinted to the final location. The finishing mat was barely in place before the Canadian team arrived and were proudly crowned the Essendon Airport & Essendon Fields Amazing Race Champions.
A challenging day for all, it truly was an Amazing Race. Special thanks to the guys at Luna Park and Young & Jacksons for their flexibility and quick execution of plan ‘B' !! The team from Essendon Airport and Essendon Fields were a fantastic bunch to work with, they were totally committed to the Amazing Race and all activities and challenges they faced, notability at no point did anybody mention the weather.
